Kaffee und Kuchen

Kaffee und Kuchen at CBS
On Thursday 17th November 2016 Ms. Lanigan’s 2nd Year German students enjoyed a “Kaffee und Kuchen” morning, a tradition in Germany, whereby friends get together over a drink and some cake to catch up for a chat.

Students sampled some typical German foods and drinks. Among the foods being sampled were “Lebkuchen” gingerbread, “Stollen” German Christmas cake, “Spekulatius” spiced biscuits, Bauernbrot German bread, “Frankfurters/ Wienerwürstchen” boiled sausages ,as well as some typical German drinks “Apfelschorle” a mix of apple juice and sparkling water,” Orangenschorle” a mix of orange juice and sparkling water, “ Schokoladenmilch” chocolate milk and “Heiβe Schokolade” hot chocolate.

The “Kaffee und Kuchen “morning was thoroughly enjoyed by all, with many students putting German specialties on their Christmas shopping list.

German students see CHEFKET gig

On Friday 14 October 2016 TY German students attended German rapper CHEFKET’s concert in Whelans Bar in Dublin. CBS students departed from the cinema complex at 9:30am. The students and their teachers, Ms lanigam amd Ms Lonergan, were equally excited as the bus departed for the capital. Perhaps unsuprisingly the Dublin traffic was hectic but that didn’t dampen students spirits.

The bus eventually arrived at 11am as students dashed to the nearby shop to stock up on supplies before the big show. As students made their way inside the Opium they were amazed at the flashing lights and atmosphere. More than 500 students and teachers from all over Ireland attended the concert and joined the CBS lads in dancing and waving their hands throughout the concert. The concert was approximetely 90 minutes long.

On the way home students spoke highly of CHEFKET and some even went to the effort to thank the German via his Twitter account. Overall it was a great experience for the group and everyone really enjoyed the day.

German Language Courses and Scholarships 2016

Every year, students from different countries who perform exceptionally well in learning German, are invited to take part in a number of programmes and summer courses in Germany. This year, to our delight, one of our students Szymon Karabin excelled in German in the 2015 Junior Certificate Exam. As a result he was nominated for, and has been successful in, attaining a Scholarship Programme in Germany this summer. This Scholarship has been awarded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, in association with the German Embassy and the Goethe Institute in Dublin.

On the 21st of June 2016, Szymon will fly to Hamburg, with a group of twelve other Irish students, accompanied by a teacher, and make his way to Kiel, a beautiful town on the Baltic Sea, where he will attend the Gymnasium Wellingdorf (school) on a three week all expenses paid Programme. His Scholarship includes full accommodation, board and a language course for three weeks. Szymon will stay with a host family, who take care of foreign students in this manner on a regular basis. Along with the other successful candidates, Szymon will attend German classes daily, as well as going on day trips and excursions. This is a tremendous achievement for Szymon, and one which will enhance not only his German language skills but also his knowledge of German culture, customs and traditions. We hope that this will instil a lifelong love of the German language, people and country.

We congratulate Szymon and thank his German teacher Ms. Lanigan for helping him with this fantastic achievement.
