Kilkenny Music Festival 2018
Once again the CBS Choirs enjoyed a very successful Kilkenny music festival. The venue this year was nearby St. Canice's Church, where the wonderful acoustics enhanced the performances of the various secondary school choirs of Kilkenny and beyond.
The CBS Senior Choir performed a four-part, a cappella version of “When I’m 64” by The Beatles. This performance earned them 1st prize in the Rena Brett Memorial Cup for Male Voice Choirs. The adjudicator commented on the “energy and the technical accuracies” of the performance. All of those lunchtime rehearsals paid off in the end!
The 6th Year Choir equally impressed the adjudicator with their rendition of “Something” by George Harrison. This time the comments praised the choir on their “beautiful and well controlled tone” as well as “spot on tuning and phrasing”.
Another successful and most enjoyable festival for the choirs of CBS Kilkenny. Viva La Musica!

Kilkenny Music Festival 2016
Kilkenny Music Festival Success for CBS
It's that time of year again where the musically talented of CBS take on the Kilkenny Music Festival. On February 23rd 2016, the choirs of CBS were successful in returning home with a number of awards. In the morning the 1st Year Choir took home the “Club House Shield” in the Unison Choir Competition with their stunning performance of “With or Without You” by U2. The blend of 1st year voices was accompanied by Ms Evison on piano, Robert Murphy on cello and Sean Heary on guitar.
The CBS Choirs continued to have success throughout the day. The CBS Senior Choir won 1st prize, the “Rena Brett Memorial Cup” in the Post Primary Male Voice Competition, performing “Haul Away Joe” by Parker-Shaw with a brilliant solo from sixth year student, Joshua Shannon. The song was filled with energy and featured a range of voices from first year to sixth year.
While the Senior Choir did not take the first place prize in the Smithwick Cup they were highly commended by the adjudicator, receiving a third place mention with “Ceann Dubh Dílís” by Anúna. This song really showed off the power of the Senior Choir and what they have to offer with Christian Conefery accompanying on the Bodhrán.
A Chamber Choir of fifth year students were awarded second place in the Post Primary School Chamber Choir Competition, performing a well-blended acapella version of the traditional Irish song “The Parting Glass”, but unfortunately missing out by one mark to Kilkenny College.
Congratulations to the group of students who took home 1st place in the Senior Wind Ensemble. The group, consisting of Sean Heary, Ben Cuffe, Conor Cuffe, Colin Dempsey, Christian Conefery and Jack Ormond showed off CBS talent to the max, by performing an original song written by Conor Cuffe.
The second day yielded further wins for CBS with:
Ben Kavanagh placing second in the U15 Cello, Sean Heary winning the Senior Brass Solo Competition, Robbie Murphy winning the U16 Cello and first year student Cillian Murphy winning the Boys Solo Singing category.
Further awards were presented to Liam Hennessy, Daire Maher and Ultan Conroy who won the Wind Chamber Ensemble and Daire Maher who also won Senior Saxophone.
Other students who put in terrific individual performances were: Ernan Kavanagh, Gavin Phelan, Patrick Fitzgerald who participated in the Clarinet/Saxophone Competition and Ben Kavanagh, and Jordan Butler who both participated in the Solo Singing Competition.
Well done to all our representatives for an unforgettable achievement.
This enjoyable day of musical entertainment in St Canice's Church would not have been possible without the hard work of Ms Dowling and Ms Evison who spent countless months before the competition bringing all choirs up to the standard they are at today. The commitment and genuine interest of all choir members was very evident during the competitions.
The Kilkenny Music Festival continues over the next few days, and we would like to wish the best of luck to all CBS Students taking part in the various competitions.
