The Great Debate! CBS v Pres Kilkenny
DEBATE: Last Friday, at the close of Literacy Week, CBS challenged Pres Kilkenny to a debate. The motion “Social media is destroying our youth” was hotly contested by two well prepared teams.
A terrific atmosphere prevailed in the gymhall which was full to capacity. Despite great arguments from the CBS team, the Pres girls prevailed. It was a rousing end to a very enjoyable week. We look forward to a rematch!
Many thanks to all involved, specially our own Mr O’Brien.

What a treat we got when we went into CBS Kilkenny on Thursday morning before Literacy Week began!
Terrific motivational literacy giants met us at every turn! |

Literacy week commenced with enthusiasm on Monday 5th of October. Transition years were the first group to engage in a literacy activity with a visit to the local cinema to view a private screening of Saving Private Ryan.
Meanwhile back at school there was a flurry of activity as students were notified of Mondays competition. There were plenty of entries in both junior and senior categories. This was the first of our daily competitions; 4 pics 1 word, crosswords, brainbats, wordsearch and punctuate.
Mondays drop everything and read was a resounding success with every department participating. Every year, every class, every student and every teacher enjoyed the activity. The second drop everything and read of the week took place on Friday and was just as successful and enjoyable.
First year students had a book reading with Khan Kiely in the school library on Tuesday which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Each student was presented with a free book at the end of the reading session. We would like to thank Khan Kiely for her time and generosity.
On Wednesday fifth year students took part in a poetry workshop with visiting poet Paul Casey. The Cork born poet who was recently awarded a Cork City Council Artist's Bursary discussed poetry from both his own collection and the fifth year syllabus. Thanks to Paul Casey for an educational and enjoyable workshop .
On Thursday it was third years turn to visit the cinema for the second private screening of Saving Private Ryan. Second year students visited the local library on Thursday and Friday where they were given a tour of the library and had their membership renewed. A group of first and second year students accompanied by their teacher Ms. Evison also went to the local library to meet well known author Nicola Pierce on Thursday.
Friday marked the final day of literacy week 2015/2016. Sixth year students accompanied by their English teachers travelled to The Helix in Dublin to watch King Lear. The competition winners from throughout the week were presented with their prizes by Mr. Clarke on Friday.
Thanks to the fifth year Cairdeas students who did a great job running the first year lunchtime activities each day. Literacy week 2015/2016 was a huge success with a high level of participation in all competitions and activities across all year groups.
