Maths at CBS Kilkenny

NCCA Factsheet here
Here in CBS Kilkenny, students are actively supported and encouraged in their study of Maths by a dedicated Maths Department. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for both the Junior and Leaving Certificate Examinations. It is the intention of the Maths Department to facilitate and encourage as many students as possible to sit the Higher Level Papers, while catering for students who find the Higher level difficult.
The Maths Department is fully involved in the successful embedding of Project Maths. One of the aims of this new Maths curriculum is to enable students to experience Maths in a new way, using examples and applications that are meaningful to them. This will allow students to appreciate how Maths relates to daily life and to the world of work. This intention of Project Maths is something the Maths Department greatly supports.

In tandem with the ICT advances in Education and the imminent future introduction of Electronic devices (iPads/Laptops/etc...) for students, the Maths teachers at CBS have been issued with Tablet PC devices. These devices will enable smarter presentation in classrooms and lend themselves to the online storage of notes and classroom board-work for students. All students at CBS Kilkenny have their own Logon to the cbskilkenny.ie domain from which they have access to school based resources.
Whilst CBS Kilkenny is justifiably very proud of its strong academic performance in maths, the school also provides support to students who find the subject difficult. The aim is always to provide pupils with levels of literacy and numeracy that will be adequate for further education and for their development as individuals.
Students in CBS Kilkenny enthusiastically partake in extracurricular activities in Maths. The School has been represented in the Team Math competition sponsored by the Irish Maths Teachers’ Association (IMTA), and has qualified for the National Finals of this event. Students have also participated in the Prism Maths Test co-ordinated by N.U.I. Galway. During Maths Week, events are organised within the school for all students - activities such as these are enjoyed by pupils of all levels.
