March 18 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians
This notice is intended to help you in light of the closure of CBS Kilkenny until Monday, March 30th 2020 and possibly longer. We are all operating against a backdrop of uncertainty, and many of you are facing challenging work environments also. I hope nothing herein creates additional stress.
The teachers of CBS Kilkenny have systems in place to ensure that your son remains engaged with the curriculum during the school closure. Teachers have adopted differing approaches in terms of using on-line resources, revision aids, revision schedules and homework. I ask you to note the following:
- From noon on Wed March 18 2020, the school is closed to students and parents/guardians.
- All students and teachers have secure CBS Kilkenny email addresses. Communication will be through school email, so it is essential that your son engages through this forum.
- There are several forms of online learning engagement and resource management already in place e.g. Google Classroom, Edmodo, etc. Your son's teacher uses the forum that s/he finds most effective for the particular subject, and your son will already be familiar with many aspects of these platforms. In addition, some teachers have given hard copies of revision programs to their classes.
- Check with your son that he has; connected with his teacher via email / Google Classroom / other platform, received work and is in a position to return work. I ask that parents/guardians do not email teachers on students' behalf. This is a provision for your son. Parents/Guardians can connect with the school through office@cbskilkenny.ie as normal.
- A structured day is essential for successful online learning in the long term. Different structures will suit different students and year groups. As a guide, your son can work to his existing school timetable. Many senior students will be able to contextualise the structure of their day to suit their individual needs. It is important that your son is provided with a quiet study space with no interruption from phones/devices etc. If you feel your son needs assistance in deciding on an effective structure to his day, please ask him to contact his individual teacher or Year Head.
- Avoid any speculation around the State Exams with your son – it is going to be a national issue with a national solution.
- It is important that your son stays engaged and motivated. Your support in this regard is critical. It is not possible for teachers to do this on their own.
- Teachers are currently not preparing work for SPHE, CSPE , Digital Literacy, PE, non-exam RE or Wellbeing. Students DO NOT need to engage with their teachers for those subjects at this time.
- The pressure on TY students to stay up with academic material is not as critical as for other year groups. During these weeks, your son in TY can carry out significant research regarding the subjects he has chosen for 5th Year and his preferred third level course and career path. TY students should use the time to check websites such as careersportal.ie or qualifax.ie.
- Text messages will be used to contact you and to notify you of new notices posted on this website.
- office@cbskilkenny.ie will remain operational indefinitely and is the main means through which you can contact us.
Best regards
Tom Clarke
Principal
