Parents' Council 2012-13
About the CBS Parents’ Council
The Parents’ Council meets on the first Thursday of every month. The meetings are generally very informative and easygoing, and usually last for about an hour.
The Council plays a very important role in the promotion of co-operation between home and school. Being a member on the Council makes us more aware of what is happening in the school and hence we become more involved in our sons’ education and school life. There is a mutual respect between the school and the Council, and as a Council we do not interfere in the day to day running of the school where such responsibility rests with the school Principal. Also, we do not use the Council as a forum for complaints or problems relating to individual students.
Some of the activities that we undertake include: organising a speaker for the AGM, organising the Study Skills day in the school, assisting with teas/coffee at the Parent Teacher Meetings during the year, presenting the best Junior and Leaving Certificate students with a prize at the end of the year, and presenting the 6th Year students with a momento of their time in the school. In latter years this has taken the form of laminated certificates using the crest of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, with the students names printed on the back. We also acknowledge the retirement of staff members.

STUDY SKILLS COURSE – SATURDAY 13TH OCTOBER 2012
A large number of students from 5th Year and 2nd Year attended the Study Skills Course which was held in the school on Saturday 13th October 2012. The Parents’ Council has organised this course for the past number of years, as it has always proven to be very beneficial to the students in terms of learning new skills in how to study, making timetables, setting goals, exam techniques, etc.
The Course went very well and the feedback was again very positive from the tutors who had nothing but good things to say about the students. The students themselves also reported that the course was very informative and presented extremely well by the tutors.
The Parents’ Council acknowledges the very nice gesture by the Student Council in sending a card of thanks to us for organising the course.

The AGM. of the CBS Parents’ Council was held on Thursday 6th October 2011 in the school. There was very strong attendance at the meeting. The minutes of last year’s AGM were read and adopted. He outlined the signs and symptoms of depression and the different types of depression that can affect a person. There was interaction among the audience which was good as it encouraged people to think and give their opinions on different aspects of the talk.
At the end of the evening everyone enjoyed a chat over coffee and refreshments.
STUDY SKILLS COURSE
On Saturday 8th October more than 100 students attended a Study Skills Course in the school for 2nd Year and 5th Year students. The course was very well received and the students said they gained a lot from it in terms of how to study and get the most from study time. This course has been held for the past few years and it is anticipated that it will be held again next October, given the positive feedback both from the students themselves and also from the tutors who were very impressed with the students from the CBS.
CBS FUNDRAISER FOR ZAMBIA
As a rule, the Parents’ Council does not undertake any fundraising. However, this year we organised a fundraiser event for the school as part of its involvement in the CBS Zambia Immersion Project. In April 2012 a group of students and teachers travel to Zambia to see the work of the Christian Brothers there and to see what life is like for those less fortunate than themselves. The students will see first- hand how funds raised by them through non- uniform days, etc., have been used and will see in some instances how the quality of life for some people in Zambia has been improved as a result of their efforts.
After much deliberating, the Parents’ Council decided to hold a Style Night which would feature style, fashion advice, hair and makeup advice, tips on accessorising, etc. The event was held in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny on Thursday 13th October and fashion icon from Carlow, Ms. Faith Amond, was on hand to offer her expert advice on all aspects of fashion and style. McCauleys from High Street and Peter Marks, Market Cross, also offered advice on makeup and hair. We received much support from local businesses and had a great array of fabulous prizes for the raffle which was so attractive to the audience that more than 1600euros was raised in the raffle alone.
There was approx. 340 people in attendance in the Newpark Hotel for the Style Night. Claire Mahony, Chairperson, CBS Parents’ Council, started proceedings by welcoming everyone and then went on to briefly outline what the Zambia Immersion Project was all about. This was followed by a musical performance by a group of boys from the CBS who thoroughly entertained the audience and got a great reception. Ms. Faith Amond then took over and the remainder of the evening was all about style, fashion, hair and makeup. There were 10 models on the catwalk on the night, made up of teachers and Parents’ Council members. Mr. Tom Clarke, Principal of the CBS, spoke at the end of the evening and thanked everyone for their support and thanked the Parents’ Council for organising the event. He mentioned theCBS Zambia Immersion Project and referred to the WaSH Programme which is all about providing water, sanitation and hygiene to a number of schools in Zambia. The more funds that can be raised, the more schools can be helped through the WaSH Programme.
The Style Night was a terrific success and raised more than 6500euro. It was a great team effort by all on the Council and everyone should feel very proud of their efforts. The Council was very appreciative of the generosity of local businesses which kindly donated fabulous raffle prizes and those who helped in other ways through promotion of the event.
The night received a fantastic response from all who attended and the school is delighted with the monies raised for Zambia.
Well done to everyone!
PARENTS’ COUNCIL MEETING NOVEMBER 2011
The first meeting of the school year following the AGM for 2010-2011 was held on Thursday 10th November and again there was a very good attendance on the night. Claire Mahony, Chairperson, Gerda McInerney, Secretary, Eileen McGrath, Treasurer, Mary Delahanty, PRO all agreed to stay on in their positions for the coming year. It was agreed that a vice Chairperson be appointed and Liz Holohan was deemed elected to this position.
After the meeting Mr. Tom Clarke, Principal, on behalf of the school, offered wine, tea, coffee and refreshments to all in appreciation of the efforts of the Parents’ Council in making the Style Night such a great success. The school was overwhelmed by the amount of monies raised and totally appreciative of the Parents’ Council and the work involved in organising the event.
In a Newsletter from the NPCpp, it was noted that Engineers Ireland are offering free maths grinds for Leaving Cert and Junior Cert Higher Level Maths. These grinds are being held in Dublin but for those who cannot attend they can watch on line at www.steps.ie
