Minutes of CBS Kilkenny Parents Council AGM Tuesday 8 October 2019
Chairperson's Report
Vivienne gave a report of all the Parents’ Council activities since the last AGM. These included:
On behalf of the Parents’ Council, Vivienne expressed her deepest sympathies in respect of one of our CBS Kilkenny parents who died earlier this year. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam Dílis. The Parents Council also wish to express their solidarity with those parents who are seriously ill at present.
Principal’s Report
Mr Clarke re-iterated how important it was to play a role in your son’s school life and encouraged more people to join the Parents’ Council. Mr Clarke then gave a very comprehensive Principal’s report:
Treasurer’s Report
The Parents’ Council is funded by the €5 per family subscription which is collected at each of the Parent Teacher Meetings. In 2018/2019, the Council funded the new Spirit of Edmund Rice Student Award, made a donation to the TY Lourdes Fund as well as insurance costs and prizes for the best leaving and junior cert results. There is currently a balance of €488 in the account.
The two new Parents’ Council nominees to the Board of Management are Mairead McMorrow and John Bourke. The Parents’ Council wishes them both well in their new appointments. The next Parents’ Council meeting is on Tuesday 12 November at 7.30pm.
Marie Fitzgerald gave a very interesting presentation on “The Sandwich Generation – How to look after the filling in the middle” which focussed on the premise that if we as parents don’t look after ourselves, then we cannot look after others properly.

- Meet and Greet for 1st year parents
- Assisting at the December Christmas Carol Service
- Review of several School policies
- Organisation of the Race Night fundraiser in May which raised €19,100
- Design and funding for the new Spirit of Edmund Rice student award

- Excellent set of leaving cert results.
- School self-evaluation practices embedded into school life.
- Formulation of a Digital Learning Plan and the use of technologies in learning is a priority for the School. Following engagement with teachers and students, parents have now been asked to complete a survey. A report will be presented to the Board of Management in Jun 2020 based on these findings.
- Initiative to reduce the use of single use plastics in the school, students to take the “Plastic Pledge”, encourage the use of the new School aluminium water bottle
- CBS Development Committee currently involved in organising the CBS Corporate Dinner taking place in Lyrath Estate Hotel on 2 November.

The Parents' Council AGM will take place on Tues 8 Oct 2019 @ 7.30pm. Guest Speaker is Marie Fitzgerald, Coach & Relationship Mentor, who will speak on ‘The Sandwich Generation – How to look after the filling in the middle.’ Marie will present on topics which support our wellbeing as we parent teenage boys and balance other areas of responsibility in our lives, such as Growing Self-Awareness, the Importance of Self-Care and a brief introduction to Mindfulness. When we “Fill our own cup first” we are in a better place to connect with and provide support to our teenage sons.
Mr Clarke will also speak on focus and plans for new school year.

CBS Parents Council Meeting Minutes 10 September 2019
The meeting opened with a prayer.
Chairperson Address
Vivienne welcomed all present, especially the large number of First Year Parents. She spoke about the Parent Council plans for the year ahead.
Treasurer's Report
The Race Night cheque will be formally presented to Mr Clarke at the AGM in October.

Ms Maguire attended the meeting and updated the Parents’ Council on a very wide range of issues. Some of the main points raised were:
Ms Maguire distributed a copy of the DES Inspection Report of the CBS Kilkenny TY Programme which took place in March 2019. The school received a very favourable evaluation.
The school were asked to consider organising physical activities for the 300+ students who are in the school during lunch time. Some parents queried if it was possible to increase the number of students who could travel on the Annual French trip as some did not get a place due to the increased intake of First Year students this year. Both issues will be raised with Mr Clarke.

- Introduction of Spanish & Italian as subjects (Italian in TY only)
- 150 First Years is the largest student intake ever
- Significant electrical update completed over the summer
- New Board of Management to be formed in October 2019
- Digital Learning Plan to be rolled out this year
- 8 new staff and 2 retirements
- Junior Cert results due 4 October
- SENO (Special Education Needs Officer) review on 16 September

Vivienne welcomed all present. She congratulated Mr Clarke and the Friends of CBS Committee for the very successful Gala Dinner which was held in Lyrath Estate in November.

Mr Clarke updated the Council on a very wide range of issues, the following of which were some of the main issues discussed:
Mr Clarke also encouraged parents to log in regularly into the School’s VSWare system to log their son’s attendance and performance.

Following queries by several parents in relation to the possibility of organising activities for the 300 plus students who are in the school during lunch time, it was decided to explore options for some type of organised physical exercise to take place in the gym during lunchtimes. Some parents volunteered to formulate a proposal to present to Mr Clarke as a Pilot Project of Exercise to take place over 8 weeks in the New Year.

- Summer refurbishment work is ongoing
- SIP Digital Learning Plan is near the Report and Planning Stage
- New Student Council in place
- 5 Projects progressing to the BT Young Scientist Competition in January 2020

- U19 Basketball Team having a great season & competing in South East semi-final on Fri 15 Nov
- Senior Debating Team had another success this week in the Concern Debating Competition
- TY Green Schools & ERST Committee will take part in a Biodiversity Workshop in November
- GAA Teams in training for new season starting in January

A comprehensive report was provided by Mr Croghan, some of the main issues covered were:
Following queries by several parents in relation to the possibility of organising activities for the 300 plus students who are in the school during lunch time, a comprehensive proposal prepared by the Parents’ Council was presented to Mr Clarke. Ms Maguire informed the Parents’ Council that there is no availability of the hall during lunch time as it is used by the hurling teams. It was suggested that the Maltings (across from the school) could be used as an alternative venue for lunchtime exercise classes. Ms Maguire will explore this as a possibility.
A position paper on Direct Provision from ERST entitled “Futures on Hold” and its impact on students wellbeing and learning was discussed. The report is available at the following link:

The AGM for 2020/2021 has been set for 13 October, with Mr Ger Brick as speaker. Mr Brick is a leading facilitator in Internet safety and Cyberbullying workshops and speaks extensively in schools

Ms Maguire on behalf of Mr Clarke, updated the Council on a very wide range of issues. The following were some of the main issues discussed:
- AP1 and AP2 positions have been appointed in the School
- A Junior Cycle SLAR and CBA calendar is being prepared
- 2JP McManus scholars, 3 Entrance Scholars in UCD, 1 In TCD and 1 in UCC from the Class of 2018/19
- Subject choice process for TY students will start in Jan 2020
- Very successful Christmas jumper day which raised €4,000 for 4 local charities.
Teachers Report
A comprehensive report was provided by Mr Croghan, some of the main issues covered were:
- Funding received from Kilkenny County Council towards the new school garden
- CBS to take part in the” Feachtas Tráth na gCeist” national finals in March
- Launch of the “Well Read” programme in school to encourage all students to read more

- Student survey taking place re new school jacket
- Ms Culleton appointed as new AP11
- Fun Run to take place on 2 April
- Incoming 1st Years assessment took place on 8 Feb
- 5th Year subject choices being finalised
Teachers Report
A comprehensive report was provided by Mr Croghan, some of the main issue covered were:
- Young St Vincent De Paul society to undertake a Befriending Project with elderly people in the community
- Congrats to Cross Country runners on recent successes, to Drama group who qualified for National Finals in Cork and to 1st & 2nd yr basketball teams on their recent performances.
- Irish Oral preparation workshop for 6th years to take place after mid term
