ERST (Edmund Rice Schools Trust) National Student Council Conference 2017

On Thursday 6th April 2017 our Transition Year Representatives, Michael Power and Liam Kelly - O Rourke travelled with Ms. Nolan Kennedy to the Edmund Rice Schools Trust Conference in Morans Red Cow Conference Centre in Dublin. The topic of this Conference was Mental Health. Mental Health is an important theme in today's society, especially among teenagers. Guest speaker on the day was Dr. Tony Humphries. Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Author and International speaker. The students found the conference to be very informative and enjoyed it very much. They learned so much about positive Mental Health and how we as a school community can improve Mental Health. They conversed with students from different C.B.S schools from around the country and shared different ideas about Mental Health. Our pupils believed this exercise gave them a greater insight into other peoples views and feelings on Mental Health. The pupils felt the Conference allowed them extend their knowledge on Mental Health which will benefit the school community in the future.

Student Council Elections 2016/17

PictureStudents casting their votes at the 2016/17 Student Council elections
The school year commenced with the Student Council Elections which took place on Wednesday 5th October 2016. On the morning of the elections the senior cycle students registered, received their ballot papers and cast their votes in polling booths set up in the GP room. Four TY students acted as returning officers and ensured that the voting ran smoothly.

The following week the junior cycle students were balloted and cast their votes during their CSPE class. Students found it to be a very worthwhile exercise that helped them gain an understanding in to how the nomination, voting and election process works. In total twelve students have been elected to sit on the 2016/2017 Student Council. We wish them well in their endeavours.

What is a Student Council?

A Student Council is a representative structure through which students can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.

Why have a Student Council?

Student Councils give students the opportunity to be actively involved in the school. This is of benefit to the whole school community. The 2005 report from the Second-Level Students Councils in Ireland identified the following advantages to having a Student Council:
  • Creates a positive school atmosphere.
  • Creates a caring school environment which is supportive and inclusive.
  • A vehicle for student participation.
  • Beneficial impact on issues such as discipline, bullying and Staff-Student relations.
  • Creates educational opportunities for students.
  • Provides an interactive learning environment.
  • Students can develop communication and leadership skills, responsibility and accountability.
  • Valuable resource to management, teachers and other students.

Elected representatives:

At the first meeting of the Student Council the following officers were elected.

Chairperson: Shane Mc Geary
Secretary: Patrick Darcy
Treasurer: Conor Dwyer
Public Relations Officers: Liam Kelly O'Rourke & Shaafin Tahir

Key Functions of the Student Council
