On Tuesday, 21/02/2018, some of our TYs participated in a soccer tournament at Scanlon Park. This tournament was to sponsor Suicide Awareness. Other participating schools included Presentation, Pobalscoil and Grennan. Our TYs made it to the final but lost to Grennan College. Hard luck. A great day was had by all, a huge thank you to Presentation School for organising such a great day for a fantastic cause.
Ben Kavanagh and Conor McCarthy were amongst 100 students selected across Ireland who attended the Prep-for-Med-School Day at University College Cork. The student’s experienced a wide variety of activities and presentations both at UCC and the Cork University Hospital (CUH). The activities in the morning involved:
First up was Dr. Jason Van Der Velde who is part of the West Cork Rapid Response Unit. He gave a very exciting and interesting presentation about the life of a rapid responder in West Cork. They were then greeted by State Pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster who discussed the forensic examination of a crime scene and the qualities and qualifications needed to be a forensic scientist. The students then had the privilege to witness a live Caesarean section through video link which was performed successfully by Dr. Orflaith O'Sullivan and Dr. Colm Lane. Outstanding interaction between Dr Lane and Dr Sullivan as they talked through the procedure. An absolutely unforgettable and awe inspiring moment to witness. Finally, Surgeon Mark Corrigan from the CUH gave a very informative presentation about his journey to becoming a surgeon and the everyday experience of being one. Overall, it was a wonderful day experienced by both students and teachers who went with them. It provides a wonderful taster for students who wish to pursue a career in medicine. During the midterm, the TYs got a chance to spend a few days in Germany. They visited cities such as Nuremberg and Munich and got a chance to see many historical sites and buildings. More to come, but for now, here's a slideshow of the photos we took. Good luck to all 3rd and 6th years doing their Pres at the moment. All the hard work and study will have finally paid off!
The TY's will be off to Germany tomorrow night. They will be visiting the cities of Munich and Nuremberg and will see places such as Hitler’s office and the site of the Nuremberg rallies. We’re all looking forward to the trip.
We can't wait to update on our adventures over in Germany. I'm sure there will be a funny story to be told. Last Wednesday, the whole TY year group went on a trip around UCD. The students got a tour of the campus and were informed of the courses available.
Good luck to the TY students competing in the AIB Build a Bank competition today. These include Mike Murphy, Kevin Murphy Kennedy, Andy O Donnell, Liam Coughlan and Conor McCarthy. They have done all their hard work with the help of Ms Colleton and Ms Brown.
