​Thursday the 24th of March, all the people doing Gaisce will be heading off to their annual Gaisce trip to Ballymacarbry. Many of the TY students have organised the trip along with the help of Ms. Ryan. The students organised breakfast, lunch and dinner. We will start our trip in Clonmel and spend the night in Ballymacarbry. While in Ballymacarbry we will be staying in a hostel, there is an astro pitch there where we can play soccer all night long. The trip will be 30 km over the two nights, 15 km each day. The walk will be tiring but rewarding at the end. From this we will earn the Gaisce Bronze Award or the President’s Award at the end of TY. There will be approx. 70 TY students taking part in this trip so it will be a great way to socialize and improve our fitness at the same time. 

On Thursday the 16th of March TY students did their bit for the cycle against suicide. A couple of TY’s brought in bikes and bike racks. The majority of students in the year cycled for 5 minutes each throughout the day. The innitiative for was for both the CBS and Loreto secondary schools to raise awareness of the epidemic that is suicide.Both school’s did this by wearing orange to show support to those who struggle with their mental health and to reach out to the families who have been affected.This event comes after cyclists made a stop at the school for refreshments during the cycle against suicide in 2014.It was an exhausting but worthwhile day as everyone did their bit by wearing orange and cycling.

On Monday 14 March TY students from both Presentation and CBS took part in a table quiz in support of Lourdes.There was 10 rounds in total consisting of general knowledge,music and sport just to name a few.The question proved difficult for both the boys and the girls involved 50 or so teams.During the quiz there was a bit of a surprise for students particularly from CBS students as Facebook celebrity and Hurling expert Buff Egan made the cut.Many Presentation students along with teachers from both schools were both amused and confused as to who this individual one was but by the end of the quiz everyone in the hall was aware of the name Buff Egan.Unsurprisingly the C.B.S lads were calm and composed by the presence of girls. Overall this proved to be an enjoyable experience for students in both schools congratulations to the winning team consisting of Dylan Hoyne, Casey Lalor, Ellie Walsh and Benjamin Prizeman.

On Friday 17 February TY students set their alarms for stupid o’clock in the morning to head down to the bus in St.Mary’s car park for the journey to Dublin airport.The very tired teachers and TY group arrived in the capital’s airport at 4:15am and it was next stop Frankfurt.

The TY’s arrived in Germany at 10:10am local time and there was no hanging around as we made a quick getaway on the double decker bus to Wurtzburg,first we went top the Castela where former Mr Curran gave students many facts on the site and it gave a brilliant view of Wurtzburg city which is about the size of Cork. Following this students were given free time to browse Wurzburg. After all the actions of the day. It was time to check into the hostel in the city an hour and a half away Nuremburg. After students were assigned rooms they were let out into the city for dinner. Students came back will full bellies later that night.

TY’s were given the opportunity to see where Hitler rallies took place. This was the biggest of the rally sites that were used. We then visited stage one, what was noticeable to students was the bullet holes in the pillars.Before we left Nuremburg students went to the Deutsches museum,here TY’s learned key facts about the time of Nazi Germany.After about 90 minutes in the museum it was time to head to the hostel in Munich,it was a fairly long journey for students lasting over 2 hours but to make the journey feel shorter a Mr.Bean film was put on for students to watch.    Students got checked into the hostel fairly quickly that evening giving them an hour to pack.Once the packing was done and dinner was served perhaps the highlight of the day occured,TY’s were taken to the Olympic swimming pool,each night from 8-10:30pm students got the chance to swim and jump off the diving board.

The trip was proving to be a very enjoyable experience for all and little did we think it could get any better but it did,on the Monday afternoon we got a huge surprise from Ms.Walsh as she announced  that we would be going to a match between TSV and Nuremburg at the Allianz Arena.The match was very exciting with a 2-0 victory for TSV with both goals in the first half.Perhaps the most historical and emotional part of the trip was the journey to Dachau as students got the opportunity to see how the Jewish people were treated in concentration camps during World War 2.

This was a hugely enjoyable trip for all who were involved.It went very smoothly for both teacher and student and I’m sure I speak for everyone on the trip when I say I would recommend future TY’s to go on this trip.

On Thursday the 9th Of February Ty students doing Young Social innovators and also a number of other students who wished to join it took part in a self defence course done by Self Defense Ireland. When students came in for the last 3 classes they went straight to the gym, got changed and the 2 men from the SDI talked to us about self defence and when and why we should use it. Before they taught us any moves they said you have to be able to justify your actions to hold up in court. Then when they taught us why we should use these skills, they showed what to do if someone gets in your face which involves a very simple yet very effective push. Then we got to try it on each other using pads even with the pads in between us it still sent us across the room a bit that is how effective it is. They also showed us the proper technique for the groin knee as well as how to react when someone tries to strangle you. There is no doubt all these skills will be very useful in our lives and may save one or two of us from serious harm. They also had a chat with us about a very serious sexual assault and the moral reasons as to why it is wrong.

The non German fun fun day started off with a session in KBowl. We were asked to get into groups of four. Some lads were better at bowling than others and managed to play without cheat bars. After bowling some of the students headed down to Centra to stock up food for the cinema. In no time, we were all waiting outside the cinema. We were shown the movie Split. The movie was about a psychopath who had 24 different personalities in one person, He kidnapped 3 girls around the age of 17. He locked them away in his dungeon. We will say no more as we don’t want any spoilers for the readers. After cinema we were given an opportunity to eat some lunch. Straight after that we all headed for the Watershed. At the Watershed we played soccer. After soccer we were free to go home. This was a tremendously awesome day. We would like to thank all teachers for organising this.
