Our whole year recently attended a talk in the Watergate Theatre about keeping safe and making the right decisions. Fourth years from all over Kilkenny including St.Kieran's College, Presentation, Loreto and Kilkenny College. I feel its very important to be talked to upon this subject at this age as we are all starting to mature into adults.
The two guards who talked to us throughout the show were very good and represented themselves well. They talked to us along the topic of drugs and alcohol and the effects they might have on us. They told us some very interesting facts about how one can/bottle of alcohol can take 2 hours to completely leave your system, a naggin of vodka can take up 6 hours to leave your system and a bottle of wine can take up to 9 hours to leave your body. I was shocked at this as I thought wine would be the least effective towards someone. They spoke to us about one punch assaults and incidents that happen on nights out. The Gardai have more people working at night on Fridays and Saturdays than they do on a regular Monday or Tuesday because of the amount of incidents they get called to involving violence and drunkenness late at night. I found it very interesting about how much damage a punch can do to someone. They showed us a few videos of people making right and wrong decisions after having too many drinks of alcohol at a party. There was scenarios where a boy was bringing a girl by the hand into bedroom. Hours later, close to the morning, you could see the disappointment and regret on her face, realising what she had just done cannot be undone. This gave us the knowledge and showed us to be respectful towards girls on a night out as both, more than likely, have consumed alcohol. If this incident was reported to the guards, the person that would be in trouble would the the male and he would have been convicted of raping the female. Even though this may sound unfair and sexist, it's the truth. Overall, I thought this talk was very worthwhile and informative. I feel that everyone that attended this talk will take something from it and they will feel much safer when they are going on a night out. The things we were informed about that day will stay with us forever, especially the serious things such as the one punch assaults and making the right and important decisions when you really need to. One word of advice I’d take from this is to always stick with your friends when going out. I’d like to thank the two Gardai who came in, Aidan Fitzpatrick and Andy O’Neill for coming in to talk to us and teaching us new things. I thought the experience was very enjoyable and i took it very personally. Also, I’d like to thank the Watergate Theatre for having us in. Now, it's time to meet the crew.... Ben Tyrrell (IT guy) - Is 16 years old and is delighted to be part of this team. Ben is bringing Australian culture to the team after spending 4 years down under. Liam Coughlan (Interviewer) - The first of our hard hitting interviewers who hopes to bring some taste to the website by brinigng you interesting facts about the activities being done in this year. Conor McCarthy (Interviewer) - Conor is the second interviewer on the team, who is not to be messed with. He'll get the information out of you one way or another. Cian Rowe (Photographer) - The first of our team photographers who hopes to deliver some fantastic pictures giving an insight into the goings of TY life. David Power (Photographer) - David joins Cian in taking all the action shots throughout the year. David has a keen eye for capturing those exciting and funny moments that will surely be had throughout the year. Michael Rafter (Editor in Chief) - Michael will be responsible for keeping the team in check, setting deadlines and getting the articles published for your enjoyment. He will make sure all our material is crisp and fresh like a Keogh's roll. We hope you enjoy this blog and give us feedback along :)  |
