St. Peter's College vs CBS Kilkenny

1/12/2016

This game proved to be a tight encounter as there was little to separate the two sides. Despite a shaky start for St. Peter's college as they struck a very poor wide with with just under two minutes gone. They proved to be a difficult opposition with their corner forward causing havoc as he notched four fabulous points. The C.B.S men showed great heart throughout this game as they responded to every question St.Peter’s asked. While asking their own questions from the likes of Conor Heary and Conor Drennan who was prolific from frees. Scoring five for his afternoon’s work. Conor Heary eventually broke the deadlock during the second half thus lifting the Kilkenny sides spirit and draining the oppositions the sheer determination and class shun through from the C.B.S and that’s what won them the game. No one showed this more than Oisin Murphy who broke two hurls in the heat of battle his effort was eventually rewarded with a well taken score in the 57th minute. Overall C.B.S Kilkenny edged this game and were deserving winners as they made their way back to the Marble city.

Sports Leadership

As part of the Gaisce Bronze Award some TY students decided to gain the new skill of Sports Leadership. Every Thursday afternoon since the 10th of November a group of 25 students along with Seamus Nugent lock themselves out from the outside world in Room 2 to proceed with their study of skills and behaviours involved in the programme. Recently the crew gained the knowledge of how to work as part of a group in life, at work and as sports leaders. They learnt that the main skills required to work effectively as a group are communication, co-operation and organisation. These skills are important so they get work done, don’t fall out as a group and get every task done on time. The aim of all the participants is to be able to plan, assist in leading and review sports and physical activity as well as to complete the new skill section of the Gaisce Bronze Award. We wish the best of luck to all the squad involved in the programme!

On Friday the 18th of November and Tuesday the 22nd of November TY students completed their aptitude tests as part of the careers subject. This exam gives students a small indication to where their talents lie. This test had a number of different aspects such as a speed test, maths and vocabulary,

Overall some students found different segments of the test easier than others but overall it wasn't too difficult and hopefully the results will give an accurate indication of where students talents are thus making them 1 step closer to discovering their future career.

Green Schools

This November, our struggle for the Green Flag has begun. Mr.Ahern's Green Army has set the goal to get our first Green Flag by December 2017. The first objective that arose was to spread awareness. This was tackled by setting up an Awareness Team. They conversed with second years and fourth years to co-operate and compromise for the schools long-term goal. Mr.Ahern and the Litter Warden from the Kilkenny County Council addressed the issues of dumping rubbish onto the streets to spread fear amongst us using a powerpoint. An inspirational video was also played to empower us into commiting ourselves into the rehabilition of the earth. Our beloved caretakers Ken and James came in to give a speech about how much rubbish is being disposed by the school every single week. They also said that segregation of rubbish is a rising problem of the school and is making their lives more challenging everyday. Geraldine Moloney gave  us leaflets and information for appropriate equipment and items to achieve our goal. We will all now try our best to get the Green Flag.

Castlecomer vs CBS Junior football

17/11/2016

On Wednesday the 18th of November the Junior footballers made the short trip out to Castlecomer. The C.B.S men were very focused on the task in hand from the start. The weather wasn’t doing both sides any favours. It was windy and the pitch was like a swamp. The C.B.S men got off to a good start by putting a few early points over the blackspot. That was helped by the C.B.S having the wind to their backs in the first half. Then Castlecomer put the ball into the back of the net just on the stroke of half time. The C.B.S men had many goal chances on the day. The CBS men tryed hard but unfortunatley there was to be no comeback as Comer were too strong on the day. Comer got another goal and at that stage there was no way back for the C.B.S men. It was a hard fought battle but unfortunately we fell short of the line. The final score was Castlecomer 2-5 to the C.B.S 0-4.

On Friday the 28th of October. Ty students went to a science forensics workshop in the PE hall which lasted 3 classes. The aim of the exercise was who murdered a young girl in October 2011. Students got the opportunity to study evidence which was around the PE hall. Evidence included examining soft drink cans from the scene, fingerprints and soles of shoes found at the murder scene. When certain groups figured out who the murderer was, the instructor brought 3 lads up in front of the class and after putting crucial evidence together arrested the guilty party. The murderer was Paul who attempted to kidnap the young girl but during the struggle was pushed and hit her head. Paul was convicted of manslaughter. Overall students enjoyed the workshop as they got to use science in a fun way and got an insight into the job of a forensic scientist. Most people enjoyed it and said they would love to do it again.

The transition year classes had the opportunity to visited Shielbaggan in county Carlow for a kayaking experience like no other. We firstly got dressed in the appropriate gear, learned the basics of kayaking and played water polo. We then all entered the loch. We then went down a small river connecting to the river Barrow. We entered it by going down a waterfall. We continued down the river navigating weirs and rapids. On the way we played games like trying to stand up on our kayaks and switching kayaks with someone else. We eventually arrived in Graignamanagh where our dry clothes and food were waiting for us. Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable trip for all .

Junior Leinster Championship: CBS vs Castlecomer

10/11/2016

The junior hurlers bowed out of the Leinster championship. CBS went into the match as favourites but it just wasn't to be. It was a tough physical battle. CBS raced into a five point lead with an early goal from Jamie Ryan. Comer kept in touch with a few frees. It was a draw game at halftime. Comer scored a goal midway through the second half. It looked like the match was getting away from CBS. A late goal from Justin Cahill made it a draw game. Both teams exchanged points and it was a draw game at full time. The match was set for extra time. It was a titanic battle but in the end Comer came out on top. CBS were unlucky but on the day Comer were the better team. Thanks to Mr. Dwyer, Mr Ruth, Mr. Tyrrell and Mr. Moran for their hard work.
