Personal Safety Ireland Workshop

Over the course of two days - Thursday 6th April and Friday 7th April - Personal Safety Ireland conducted a workshop in self-defence for our Transition Year students. Our students were taught by Alex Walsh and Nick Feehan. The students were extremely interested in the course and gained useful life skills out of it. It was enjoyed by everyone and the skills that our students learned by completing the workshop are invaluable in today's world.

E.R.S.T. Conference

On Thursday 6th April 2017 our Transition Year Representatives, Michael Power and Liam Kelly O'Rourke, traveled with Ms Nolan-Kennedy to the Edmund Rice School's Trust Conference in the Red Cow in Dublin. The topic of this conference was Mental Health. Mental Health is an important topic in today's society, especially among teenagers. The students found the conference to be very interesting and they enjoyed it very much. They learned so much about positive mental health and how we as a school community can improve mental health. They conversed with students from C.B.S' around the country and shared different ideas about mental health. Our pupils believed this exercise gave them a greater insight into other peoples views and feelings on mental health. The pupils felt that the conference was very informative and allowed them to extend their knowledge on mental health and their finds will benefit the school community in the future.

Gaisce Walk 2017

Our Transition Year Students, who are partaking in the Gaisce Bronze Awards, completed their Adventure Journey over the course of two days and a night - 23rd March 2017 until the 24th March 2017. They walked 15km each day through Tipperary and stayed over night in the hostel in Ballymacarbry. The students were accompanied by Ms Ryan and Sandra on the walk and Mr Morrissey joined the students later that evening in the hostel.

The students showed great enthusiasm and did not let the length of the walk affect their attitude. The pupils were great sports and thoroughly enjoyed the activity!!

Eine Reise Nach Bayern - A Trip To Bavaria

On Friday 17th February 2017, 72 students and 8 staff departed St Mary's car park for  once in a lifetime trip to the German state of Bavaria. They were all bursting with excitement as they set off on their journey. They flew from Dublin Airport into Frankfurt International Airport. From there they drove to the picturesque town of Würzburg where they received a historical tour of the Marienberg Fortress by our own Mr Curran. The students were then given free time to explore the town and try some of the local cuisine ( or as they say in Germany "Essen"). The students spent their first night in a renovated castle called Kaiserberg (King's Castle). They adored the building and were very interested in the history behind it. The students were very lucky to be given the opportunity to stay here as it is one of the most sought after hostels in all of Germany.  In the evening the students spent some time exploring the city of Nürnberg.

The next day our Transition Years were given the opportunity to visit the sites of the Nürnberg Rallies. They visited the Luitpold Arena, the Zeppelin Field and the Congress Hall. No other school in Ireland has been to these places of historical significance, this will benefit those wishing to study Leaving Cert history next year. After they visited the sites and went to the documentation centre the pupils were given free time to see
Nürnberg  in the daylight. After lunch the pupils went to Room 600 where the Nürnberg Trials were held. They were in awe of it and they showed much interest. From there they travelled to München where they stayed in a cozy hostel called Haus International München. They were served dinner and then were given the chance to go to the Olympic Swimming Pool that was a short 20 minutes walk from the hostel.

On Sunday the students visited Dachau kz. It was a very emotional trip but it is important that we remember what happened there so it won't happen again. Mr Curran, who as always is a wealth of information, gave the lads a tour of the camp before they attended mass, said by Fr Jim, in Carmelite Monastery. It was a lovely mass. After the mass the boys were given time to explore the camp and the museum before being shown a short documentary on what life was like in the camp. Once they left Dachau kz they headed into the centre (Stadtmitte/Stadtzentrum) of
München where they were greeted by the beginning of "Das Karneval". They lads loved all the excitement and the atmosphere was ecstatic! After lunch the whole group proceeded to Die Deutsches Museum, where they learned just about everything about the German country. Again, after dinner the boys were given the opportunity to go to the Olympic Swimming Pool.

On Monday the whole group went to Garmisch Partenkirchen to go up onto the Alps. Everyone was amazed by the stunning views at the top of the mountain. The group took a cable car to the top of the Osterfelderkopf. Here they were able to soak in the mesmerising views and were able to get something to eat. After they descended the mountain, and had a sing-song or two, they had the annual snowball fight! Just when they thought the fun had died down Ms Walsh surprised them with 3 amazing opportunities. The first being that they would be driving through the beautiful countryside of Austria. The second was that they would be going to the Allianz Arena later that night and the third was that while they were at the Allianz they would see FC
Nürnberg play 1860 TVS München! They loved it so much. No one was more delighted to be going to that match than our students and they showed their support for FC Nürnberg by cheering, shouting and wearing their newly purchased scarfs. It was one of the best moments of the trip.

On the last day the lads were sad to be leaving. That didn't stop them from having fun though! In the morning they were given a tour of the Nazi sites by Mr Curran, including a visit to Der Führerbau (The leader's building) which is where Hitler's office was. The building itself is now a music school but the office is not used by most. Our students are are part of the few people that have been in the office since the downfall of the Nazis. After the tour they were given the last chance to explore München and do some last minute shopping. After their free time they went to Der BMW Welt. Here they looked at the cars and motorbikes and overall had a good time. Once they were finished they headed for the bus and left for the airport.

Our students had fantastic time and loved every minute of the trip. They immersed themselves in the German culture, took in the scenery and learned about the history of the country. By the end of the trip some of them were even speaking a little German! It was an amazing opportunity and a once in a lifetime trip!

Transition Years Go To University

On Tuesday 7th of February our Transition Year students visited U.C.D. They received a talk by a professor about the various different courses that the university has to offer and he went through each course in great detail. Each student was given a prospectus with a full list of courses and details regarding clubs, societies and accommodation. After their talk they were split up into groups and given a guided tour around the campus by a student ambassador. Our students found the visit very informative and it gave them food for thought regarding their upcoming subject choice.

Transition Year Students Take A Go At Debating

On the 2nd of February 2017 our six of our Transition Year students participated in an in-house debate for Catholic Schools Week with the motion "Should Religious Education Be Thought In Schools". The proposition team consisted of Oskar Svalbe, Filip Kowalski and Olaf Samuel. The opposition team consisted of Liam Kelly O'Rourke, Jacob Lowe and Michael Power. The debate was well researched and our students made impressive arguments on both sides. When the debate was over the general TY population had the chance ask questions to the debaters during the open forum. It was a close call but In the end the opposition team won. Congratulations and well done to all our students!

Transition Year Students Attend A Careers Summit

Ahead of their subject choice for 5th year our Transition Year students attended a careers summit in Croke Park on Tuesday 10th January 2017. The idea behind the careers summit was to give students the opportunity to speak with different businesses, organisations and colleges to give them an idea of what they might like to do after they leave school. There were a number of guest speakers present and our students really enjoyed the experience. They found it to be very interesting and they gained valuable information and knowledge that will benefit them when it comes to deciding what subjects to pick in the coming weeks.

Transition Year Students Visit Glasnevin Cemetery and Croke Park

On Friday 2nd December our Transition Year students traveled with their history teachers to Glasnevin Cemetery and Croke Park. They were given a guided tour around both of the historical sites. Our students found it very insightful and enjyed it very much. The trip was centred around Irish history to coincide with the their study of Irish Politics in the 20th Century. All of our students spoke highly of the tours and the information they were presented with. It was a fantastic day thoroughly enjoyed by all.

TY Students Try Their Hands On Samba Drums!

On Monday 20th November our Transition Year classes got the the opportunity to try their hands on bass drums, snare drums and agogo bells under the supervision of Tom. The classes participated in small teamwork activities and slowly built up to a semi-complicated synchronised activity before playing the drums. When the classes got the opportunity to play the drums they learned quickly. By the end of the first lesson they were able to play a short tune together that sounded fantastic. The students enjoyed every minute of it and had a vast amount of fun playing the various instruments.

TY's Become Forensic Scientists For The Day!

On Friday 28th October our Transition Years were given the opportunity to participate in a forensic science workshop. They were given a talk by a forensic scientist and were given the chance to solve a murder using forensic science. They had so much fun and learned a vast amount about the different areas in forensic science. All of the students took a leaflet about forensic courses in Ireland. It was a marvellous day and the students enjoyed every minute of it.

Transition Years Enjoy German Concert!

On Friday 14th October our Transition Year German Students were brought by their teachers, Ms Lanigan and Ms Lonergan, to Dublin to attend a German concert by rap artist Chefket, who is embarking on a European tour. The concert was offered by the Goethe-Institut and was held in Whelan's, Wexford Street. Over 500 students and teachers, from all over Ireland, attended the concert. The tickets were in high demand and we were fortunate to be the first school to obtain the sought after tickets. The students found the concert to be entertaining as well as educational. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all and was a fantastic learning experience for our students.

Transition Years Try Their Hands At Kayaking

Our Transitions Years tried kayaking over the last two weeks. They went kayaking in the River Barrow from Clashganny. For the majority it was their first time. They spend 3 hours learning and practising the kayaking skills that they were taught. The Transition Years were quick learners and they were experts by the end of the day. Everybody had a fantastic time and said the experience was worthwhile and fun.
